If you search Google for “Is Cyprus in Schengen?”, you will find surprisingly different answers.

Some websites say Cyprus is joining Schengen in 2026. Others refer to 2027. Some imply that holding a Cyprus residence permit already allows unrestricted short-term travel throughout the Schengen Area.

So what is actually true?

The short answer is:

No. As of 6 September 2026, Cyprus is not yet a full member of the Schengen Area.

Cyprus is an EU Member State and participates in Schengen cooperation, but internal border controls with Cyprus have not yet been abolished.

The country is, however, significantly closer to full integration than it was a few years ago.

Is Cyprus in Schengen in 2026?

No.

As of September 2026, Cyprus has not yet fully joined the border-free Schengen Area.

The European Commission’s official Schengen page currently lists the Schengen Area as comprising 29 countries: 25 EU Member States plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Cyprus remains outside the full Schengen Area.

Will Cyprus Join Schengen in 2027?

But technical readiness is only one part of the process.

A political and legal decision is still necessary before internal border controls with Cyprus can be abolished.

Is Cyprus a Schengen Country?

Not yet.

A useful way to describe the current position is:

Cyprus is an EU Member State participating in Schengen cooperation, but it is not yet fully part of the Schengen Area without internal border controls.

What Is the 90/180-Day Schengen Rule?

For many eligible third-country nationals, short stays within the Schengen Area are generally limited to:

90 days in any rolling 180-day period.

This is not simply “three months in and three months out”.

The calculation operates on a rolling reference period.

Once Cyprus becomes fully integrated, the Cyprus Government says qualifying Cyprus-issued visas and residence permits will provide short-stay movement in the rest of Schengen under the applicable 90/180-day framework.

Schengen status
